The rectangular, gable-roofed house has parged stonework made to resemble smooth ashlar blocks. Its east front is dominated by a monumental two-story Doric portico with a full pediment and lunette, and a balcony spans the second story. Interior features include plaster walls, wood moldings, mantels and a paneled stair. The house is regarded as a rare, outstanding regional example of Roman or Jeffersonian Classicism, a style based on the ancient temple form. Wagener belonged to one of the county's most prominent early families. His father David followed Jemima Wilkinson, the Public Universal Friend, to western New York, and Abraham ran mills, served as postmaster and justice of the peace, and donated land for the county courthouse in Penn Yan. The house remains a local landmark with strong integrity.","period_of_significance":"1833","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Early Classical Revival (described in the text as Roman or Jeffersonian Classicism)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the form says it retains a high degree of architectural integrity and its historic plan.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.117188-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000959.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000959/7aa6df1f1a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000959/7aa6df1f1a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Katie1833","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abrahamwagenerhouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie1833</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abrahamwagenerhouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315515","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Wagener_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4669217"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/wagener-abraham-house-94000959/"}
