Its rear portion dates from 1841 and the building was extensively rebuilt in 1881.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an outstanding, well-preserved example of late nineteenth century Romanesque Revival religious architecture. It survives almost intact from its 1881 reconstruction, on both exterior and interior. It is also described as an important local landmark reflecting the late nineteenth century development of this part of Yates County.","narrative":"This brick church on Main Street in the hamlet of Middlesex Center, Yates County, began as a Greek Revival building. The local Methodist Society, organized in 1820, built the rear portion in 1841 at a cost of $3,000. In 1881 the congregation completely rebuilt it in the Romanesque Revival style, and almost no material from the earlier building remains. The church is one story, with common-bond brick walls on a rubblestone foundation and a steep gable roof. A three-story engaged corner tower holds the main entrance, and corner buttresses, corbel tables and round-arched stained glass windows mark the style. The tower's spire was removed in the mid-twentieth century. Inside, a nave with a center aisle, a raised altar, plaster walls over beaded wainscoting, and original pews and furniture survive from 1881. The church was listed for its architectural value as a well-preserved late nineteenth century example and as a local landmark.","period_of_significance":"1881","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Romanesque (Romanesque Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function are both religious; the spire that once topped the tower was removed in the mid-twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.390965-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000945.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315558","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middlesex_Center_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6841892"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/middlesex-center-methodist-church-94000945/"}
