It is also a rare example of the style built in rubble stone. It keeps its original form, center-hall plan and much historic interior fabric.","narrative":"Built around 1830 by Smith McLoud, Jr., this two-story farmhouse stands on the north side of Italy Turnpike west of Italy Hill, in Yates County, New York. McLoud inherited the land from his father, who had bought it from Solomon Hewitt in the mid-1820s. The house is built of coursed rubble stone with a gable roof, a molded cornice with partial returns, a broad frieze and wood corner pilasters applied over the stone. The south entrance has a four-panel door with sidelights and pilasters, and a later porch shelters it. Later changes include one-over-one windows replacing the original six-over-six sash, and late twentieth-century additions at the rear and west side. Inside, the center entrance, double-pile plan, plaster walls, paneled doors, turned stair balusters and mantels survive. It was listed as a rare stone example of Greek Revival architecture in the county and remains a single-family home on about 22 acres.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830","architect_builder":"Smith McLoud, Jr. (builder, as stated in the significance narrative); form lists architect/builder as n/a","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; late 20th-century additions on the rear and west sides are described as unsympathetic, but the interior is highly intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.837974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000944.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315589","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_McLoud_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707308"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/mcloud-smith-house-94000944/"}
