It is one of the county's earliest surviving church buildings and keeps a high degree of integrity, including a largely intact early nineteenth-century sanctuary. It is also a local landmark tied to the mid-nineteenth-century development of the area.","narrative":"Himrod Baptist Church is a wood-frame meeting house on Himrod Road in the hamlet of Himrod, in the town of Milo, Yates County. Built in 1833 for a Baptist congregation first organized in 1804, it rests on a stone foundation and has narrow clapboard siding, a steep gable roof and a two-stage belfry with keyed arch openings. The main facade features a broad frieze, molded cornice and a pair of plank doors within a shouldered surround. Inside are a nave, a raised sanctuary with a three-part barrel-vaulted ceiling, and a choir loft above sliding wood panel doors. In 1868 the congregation spent $2,500 rebuilding the church, mainly refurbishing the interior and installing stained glass, and a rear wing was added. The church is recognized as a builder's adaptation of the Greek Revival style, notable for its rigorous simplicity. It is one of the county's earliest surviving churches and retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1833, 1868","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function are both religious; the church has served the rural community since 1833.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.990321-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000940.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315584","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himrod_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5765478"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/himrod-baptist-church-94000940/"}
