Federal features include rectangular massing, symmetrical windows and a low gabled roof, while the broad eaves, full pediment and large trabeated entrance are Greek Revival. It is also described as one of the county's most impressive early nineteenth century dwellings and a local landmark.","narrative":"Built around 1825, this two-story frame house sits on the north side of West Lake Road in Jerusalem, Yates County. It combines late Federal and Greek Revival features. Federal traits include a rectangular plan, symmetrical windows with twelve-over-twelve sash, a low gabled roof and a lunette in the gable. Greek Revival elements include broad eaves, a full pediment with flush-board tympanum and a large trabeated entrance with fluted pilasters, sidelights and transom. A one-and-one-half-story wing and a long rear wing extend to the north. Uriah Hanford built the house on a farm given to him and his wife Mary by her father, Abraham Wagener, founder of Penn Yan. Hanford was later elected county sheriff. Although the surrounding land has been lost to a mobile home park and commercial development, and some alterations have occurred, the house keeps its form, floor plan and historic interior fabric. It is regarded as an important local landmark of early nineteenth century settlement.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1825","architect_builder":"Uriah Hanford (builder, per narrative); form lists architect/builder as n/a","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival (described as transitional late-Federal/Greek Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling.
