Henry Rose built it in 1839-1840.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Hampstead is an outstanding, intact example of high-style Greek Revival domestic architecture in Yates County, meeting Criterion C. It keeps a high level of period integrity inside and out, and it is unusual for a rural example of the style to be this well articulated and preserved. Its rural setting adds to its significance.","narrative":"Hampstead is a Greek Revival country house on a hillside in Jerusalem, Yates County, New York, overlooking Route 54A. Henry Rose, a doctor by training who made his living raising merino sheep and growing fruit, built it in 1839-1840 and named it after the family plantation in Virginia. The house has a two-and-one-half-story main block flanked by recessed wings, linked by a wrap-around veranda with Tuscan columns. Corner pilasters, a wide entablature, pedimented gable ends, and blind windows that preserve the symmetry add to its formal character. Heavy post-and-beam framing supports the structure. Inside, original paneled doors, plaster cornices, and a ceiling medallion survive, along with 1880 wallpaper and mantels. A 1979 fire damaged the roofs and one wall, but repairs were careful. The property is significant as an unusually well-preserved rural example of the style, set among vineyards and woodland, and it has stayed in one family since 1840.","period_of_significance":"1840","architect_builder":"Henry Rose (built by)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling; the south wing was converted to a rental apartment in 1990 and the house was repaired after a 1979 fire.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.393494-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000937.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315580","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampstead_(Jerusalem,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5646103"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/hampstead-94000937/"}
