It was built about 1847 by John Carr and is also known as the Daniel Bostwick House.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding local example of late Greek Revival residential architecture in Yates County. It shows the style's rectangular massing, symmetrical windows, low pitched gable roof, and a monumental two-story portico with entablature and pediment. It remains highly intact in form and floor plan and is an important local landmark of the area's nineteenth century development.","narrative":"Set on an 8.1 acre parcel along New York State Route 245, half a mile south of Middlesex Center in Yates County, this house was built around 1847 by John Carr, who bought the land that year from Chancy Adams. Carr passed it to Daniel Bostwick in 1872, and it is also known by his name. The wood-clapboard dwelling rests on a stone foundation under a low pitched, pedimented gable roof. The roof extends forward to form a two-story portico with paneled posts that shelters a pair of identical entrances. One-story wings with scroll-sawn porch posts flank the main block, and together the porches form a continuous porch across the front. Inside, the original floor plan survives, along with plaster on lath walls, wood moldings and paneled doors. The house was listed as an outstanding local example of late Greek Revival residential architecture, and it remains a highly intact reminder of mid-nineteenth-century building in the county. It continues in use as a single-family home surrounded by farmland.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1847","architect_builder":"John Carr (builder, per the narrative); the form lists the architect/builder as n/a","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is single dwelling; the interior retains its original floor plan and historic fabric.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.150582-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000931.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carr_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6225264"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/carr-john-house-94000931/"}
