The form dates it to ca. 1845 in one place and 1837 in another.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding regional example of fully developed Greek Revival temple-front residential architecture, and one of the best of its type in the county. It has a monumental two-story Doric portico with full pediment, and retains a high degree of integrity. It is also an important local landmark recalling the area's nineteenth and early twentieth century development.","narrative":"Set on a two-acre parcel along West Lake Road in Branchport, in the town of Jerusalem, this two-story frame house is a temple-front example of Greek Revival design. A monumental portico of fluted Doric columns, a molded entablature and a full pediment dominates the main facade, while broad corner pilasters, a wide frieze and a low gabled roof reinforce the classical look. One-story and one-and-a-half-story wings extend to the side and rear, and the interior keeps its gabled-ell plan, plaster walls, mantels, paneled doors and stair. The house was built for Peter Bitley, born in 1801, who came to Yates County in 1833 as a lumber agent and founded his own timber business in 1843. He retired in 1867 as one of the county's wealthiest businessmen. It was listed for its architecture, as one of the finest Greek Revival residences in the county and a well-preserved local landmark. It remains a private home.","period_of_significance":"1837","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling, with a high degree of architectural integrity; an altered ca. 1867 shed used as a garage is counted as non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.305981-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000927.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315576","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Bitley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7172832"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/bitley-peter-house-94000927/"}
