It includes the West Market Street Historic District and the Montour County Courthouse.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district reflects Danville's role as an industrial and trading center in the middle Susquehanna Valley and as county seat of Montour County. It contains homes of industrialists, politicians and community leaders, and the largest and most varied collection of late 18th to early 20th century vernacular buildings in the county, along with high-style dwellings, commercial, civic and religious buildings.","narrative":"Danville sits on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River at the foot of Montour Ridge, a river town laid out on a grid around Mill, Market and Bloom streets. William Montgomery, born in Chester County in 1736, settled the site in 1776 and built the first woolen, saw and grist mill there. His son Daniel laid out the town in 1792. Iron manufacturing grew from the 1830s, and the Montour Iron Works rolling mill produced the first American T-rail in 1845. Danville became county seat of Montour County in 1850, and its population reached 3,300 by 1850. The district holds Federal houses from the 1790s, Greek Revival churches including the Mahoning Presbyterian Church of 1853, and dense brick commercial blocks on Mill Street with cast iron storefronts and pressed metal facades. Its houses reflect the wealth produced by the iron and foundry industries, and the Thomas Beaver Free Library and YMCA of 1886 recall one of the town's major philanthropists.","period_of_significance":"1792 - 1943","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Second Empire, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.654724-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/94000828.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000828/cba0e8f12f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000828/cba0e8f12f-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20_East_Market_Danville_PA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20_East_Market_Danville_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995198","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danville_Historic_District_(Danville,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5221368"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/montour-county/danville-historic-district-94000828/"}
