Its architectural fabric has changed little since 1903. Its early twentieth-century furnishings and decorative finishes also survive, giving the interior a museum-like quality.","narrative":"Perched on Solar Hill above downtown Bristol, Virginia, this brick house at 54 King Street grew in stages over roughly eighty years. Its oldest part is a ca. 1820 I house, associated with the King family and shown on an 1821 map as \"J. King's brick house.\" In 1881 John J. Lancaster added a Victorian Italianate wing that turned the house to face north. In 1892 the architects Beaver, Hoffmeister & Mould designed a further addition for banker H. E. McCoy, reorienting the front to the east and adding a Colonial Revival porch. A rear service ell by Hoffmeister & Doriot followed in 1903 for Joseph D. Mitchell. The house is described as the city's finest Victorian Italianate example. Little has changed since 1903, and the original architectural drawings, wallpaper, light fixtures and furnishings survive. A ca. 1900 frame barn also contributes to the 0.6-acre property.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820 to 1903","architect_builder":"Beaver, Hoffmeister & Mould; Hoffmeister & Doriot; John M.
