It is described as the most complete example of its type in the county and the only intact wood frame one-room school there.","narrative":"Science Hill School is a small, rectangular, one-room schoolhouse west of Alliance, Ohio, built about 1870 and moved about half a mile to its present site in 1884. The north-facing building measures 26 by 30 feet and rests on a tooled sandstone foundation, with shiplap siding over a wood frame, a front-gable roof, an enclosed entry vestibule and a belfry with a turned finial. Inside, it keeps 28 student desks, a teacher's desk, a recitation bench, bookcases, beaded wood wainscoting and a chalkboard. The original coal shed survives, along with a period hand pump and two privies rebuilt in 1992 as near copies of the originals. The school operated without interruption until 1956, making it the last one-room school in Stark County to close. It is recognized for its link to rural education in Lexington Township and as the county's most complete and intact wood frame example of this once-common building type. It now serves as a museum.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1870-1944","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: One Room School","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as a museum (Recreation & Culture); it was historically used as a school.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:06.827669-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/94000776.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000776/a22ed8925f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000776/a22ed8925f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Science_Hill_School_(Alliance,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Science_Hill_School_(Alliance,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991408","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138679734"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/science-hill-school-94000776/"}
