Additions over time were made in harmony with the original design. The log outbuildings, springhouse, early dwelling site and old roadbed add to its local significance as a surviving working farm.","narrative":"Cedar Hill is a farm on a limestone hill beside State Route 608, east of the Maury River near Buena Vista in Rockbridge County. Its main house, completed around 1821, is a five-bay, two-story brick I-house laid in Flemish bond, with a central hall, slate roof and gable-end chimneys. A one-and-a-half-story brick addition was in place by 1827, and another extension followed in 1971. Inside are paneled doors, wainscoting and distinctive carved mantels of unknown craftsmanship. Nearby stand two early log outbuildings, a stone springhouse, and several farm buildings from the early 1900s, along with the ruins of an earlier dwelling and a stretch of abandoned roadbed. Subdivision in the 1920s and 1930s reduced the farm to about 46 acres, yet it continues to operate. Listing recognized the house as a well-preserved example of the Valley of Virginia I-house and a representative early farm of the upper valley, with additions that respect the original design.","period_of_significance":"1821-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal (vernacular I-house)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Continuously occupied and maintained; the property still operates as a farm and all buildings remain in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.109344-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/6833/41683376/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/94000726.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000726/bb5514de4b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000726/bb5514de4b-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Gnupratchett","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedar_Hill_from_the_front_lawn.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gnupratchett</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedar_Hill_from_the_front_lawn.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683376","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Hill_(Buena_Vista,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15208213"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockbridge-county/cedar-hill-94000726/"}
