It sits on a 1.2-acre lot with two noncontributing outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the last remaining examples of Queen Anne architecture in Christiansburg. It is the last of its type in its neighborhood and the best of its type to survive in the town. Its eclectic massing, tower, turret, wrap-around porch and elaborate spindle work and woodwork define its character.","narrative":"Built in 1893 for William H. Pierce, a Christiansburg landowner and founder of the Pierce Insurance Agency, this two-story frame house at 311 East Main Street is a Queen Anne design. It rests on a coursed limestone foundation and combines a polygonal tower, a conical-roofed turret, a hipped roof with cross gables, four brick chimneys and a ten-bay wrap-around porch with spindle work. The first story is clad in weatherboard and the second in shingles. Inside, a central foyer opens to a parlor and study with back-to-back tile and cast iron fireplaces, and stained glass windows light the stair. The lot once covered about 4.6 acres and has shrunk to 1.2 acres. Pierce lived here until his death in 1949, and the house later passed through family hands before becoming a bed and breakfast inn. It was listed for its architecture, as the oldest house in its neighborhood and the best surviving Queen Anne example in Christiansburg. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a dwelling and a bed and breakfast inn; bathrooms were added in the 1980s for guests, and other details except the sunroom fireplace surround are described as original.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.75894-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/6819/41681981/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/94000709.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000709/43556eaa80-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000709/43556eaa80-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Oaks_-_lawn_view.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Oaks_-_lawn_view.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90002008","name":"East Main Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/east-main-street-historic-district-90002008/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681981","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oaks_(Christiansburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713315"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/oaks-the-94000709/"}
