White.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a locally significant example of a late nineteenth-century Commercial Style industrial building under Criterion C. It combines timber loft construction, fire-safety features and classical detailing in a refined facade. It is described as the best remaining example of its type in Bloomington.","narrative":"Rising five stories at the corner of Douglas and Prairie Streets in Bloomington, this red brick loft building was completed in 1895 for Samuel R. White, a local contractor and manufacturer. It was built to house his store and bank fixture business, with retail space on the ground floor and room for other small firms above. A three-story extension, probably older, was joined to it soon after. Heavy timber framing, load-bearing brick walls, and thick masonry fire-proof vaults on each floor reflect concern for safety and efficient production. The street facades have brick pilasters, segmental arched window groups, limestone sills and a corbeled cornice, giving a commercial look to an industrial building. Storefronts were altered around 1910 and the entrance in the 1920s, but the window openings and details remain. It was recognized for architecture as the best remaining example of its type in Bloomington. The building is currently vacant, with upper floors used for storage.","period_of_significance":"1894 C. 1920s","architect_builder":"White, Samuel R., builder","architectural_style":"Commercial Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant in the function section; the upper floors are used only for storage and the top floor of the extension as an artist's studio. Structurally in good condition with excellent integrity of street facades.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.369177-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/8936/28893659/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94000612.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000612/503cff47a9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000612/503cff47a9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bloomington_Il_White_Bldg1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bloomington_Il_White_Bldg1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893659","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Building_(Bloomington,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7994504"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/mclean-county/white-building-94000612/"}
