It was moved to its present site in 1931 from about three-quarters of a mile north.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinctive, highly intact example of vernacular Federal period residential architecture in western New York and one of a handful of surviving settlement-period houses in Penfield. It retains original post and beam framing, rough-hewn joists and precise window elements, and is attributed to local millwright and carpenter Calvin Owen. It also reflects the rural prosperity that followed the migration of New Englanders.","narrative":"Built around 1821 by Horace and Grace Bush, this frame house on Five Mile Line Road in Penfield, Monroe County, is a two-story, five-bay Federal style dwelling with a center entrance and side-gable roof. Wings added by about 1850 carry Greek Revival details such as Doric piers, pilasters and cornice returns. The main block uses post and beam construction, and its interior retains an original open stair, wide-plank oak floors and finely crafted mantels. In 1931 the house was saved from demolition, divided into two sections and moved less than a mile to its present lot, where it has remained unaltered. It is attributed to Calvin Owen, a local millwright and carpenter. Only six pre-1830 Federal period dwellings survive in Penfield, and most have been heavily altered, which makes this intact example notable. Grace Bush was a sister-in-law of town founder Daniel Penfield.","period_of_significance":"c1821-c1931","architect_builder":"Calvin Owen, builder","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family residence; the house has not been altered since its 1931 move.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.964161-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000590.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000590/0946181d48-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000590/0946181d48-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanielPenfield","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoraceAndGraceBushHousePenfieldNewYork.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanielPenfield</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoraceAndGraceBushHousePenfieldNewYork.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318770","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_and_Grace_Bush_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5902266"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/bush-horace-and-grace-house-94000590/"}
