It is locally known as the \"Pagoda House.\"","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, intact example of International Style residential design in a state dominated by historical styles, and the finest such work in southwest Virginia. It won a 1962 AIA Homes for Better Living First Honor Award and a 1982 Virginia Society AIA \"Test of Time\" Award. It is recommended as an exception to the fifty-year rule because of the rarity of comparable resources in the region.","narrative":"Perched on a steep hillside in Blacksburg's Highland subdivision, this square one-and-a-half story house is known locally as the \"Pagoda House\" for its sweeping hipped roof. Architect Leonard Currie, head of architecture at Virginia Tech and a former student and colleague of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, designed it in 1960 for his own family, and builder Charles Pascoe completed it in 1961. A wood frame supports a deep cantilevered roof, with glass and board-and-batten walls, brick and concrete masonry, a surrounding deck, and a central brick service core. The overhang shades the interior in summer and admits low winter sun, and a hidden radiant heating system keeps the rooms free of radiators and vents. The house won a national AIA honor award in 1962 and a state Test of Time award in 1982. It was listed as a rare, intact example of International Style residential architecture in southwest Virginia, alongside its original carport.","period_of_significance":"1961","architect_builder":"Currie, Leonard, architect; Pascoe, Charles, builder","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: International Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Retains its integrity and remains in use as a single dwelling with a carport.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.573468-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/6819/41681979/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/94000549.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000549/448028e598-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000549/448028e598-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenneth Novy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Currie_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Novy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Currie_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681979","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currie_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712226"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/currie-house-94000549/"}
