It stands on a half-acre city lot four blocks from downtown.","why_significant":"It is an intact example of early 19th-century residential architecture built with mortise-and-tenon construction. It combines vernacular Greek Revival and Federal design elements and is an early example of the hall-parlor house form, which was more commonly built later in the century. It is described as one of the oldest houses in Thomaston.","narrative":"Built around 1830, this one-story wood-frame house at 505 Stewart Avenue in Thomaston, Georgia, is among the oldest in the city. It follows a hall-parlor plan and was put together with mortise-and-tenon joinery and hand-hewn sills and beams. About 1840 the house was doubled in size with a north and rear addition. Outside, a pedimented front portico with square columns reflects a modest, vernacular Greek Revival style. Inside, the parlor keeps its original wainscoting and a Federal-style mantel, both with faux graining. The detached kitchen burned around 1930 and was replaced, and a bath and hall were added in 1938. The house is named for Sydney Barron, a farmer who bought it in 1892 and lived there longer than any other resident, subdividing its original ten acres into city lots. The builder is unknown. Its architectural value, as an early hall-parlor house that kept its integrity through later changes, supported its listing.","period_of_significance":"C. 1830","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; rehabilitated in 1992 according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.492262-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/94000526.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000526/0d5ed479b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000526/0d5ed479b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sydney_Barren_House,_Thomaston.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sydney_Barren_House,_Thomaston.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209798","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134465861"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/upson-county/barron-sydney-house-94000526/"}
