It retains a high degree of architectural integrity, including an unusually sophisticated Federal mantel. It also served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War and later belonged to the Carroll family, who helped found Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manchester.","narrative":"This small wood-frame house at 2408 Bainbridge Street sits on a high brick basement in what was once the outlying part of Manchester, the town across the James River from Richmond. Built around 1800 or soon after 1816 on land once owned by John Mayo, it began as a three-bay cottage and gained a fourth bay in the mid-nineteenth century. Inside, the main parlor keeps its Federal mantel, original chairboards, window frames and pine flooring. Few early Manchester houses of this type survive. During the Civil War the property served as a Confederate field hospital, and more than one hundred South Carolina soldiers who died there are buried on an adjacent lot. Later owners from the Carroll family helped found Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manchester and hosted its first Sunday school in 1876. After neglect in the 1970s, the house was restored in 1983 and retains a high degree of architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":"c. 1800-1900","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1983 after a neglected state in the 1970s; described as in good condition and in use as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.548798-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/6828/41682876/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/94000454.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000454/5db810ed86-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000454/5db810ed86-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weisiger-CarrollHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weisiger-CarrollHouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682876","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weisiger%E2%80%93Carroll_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16903072"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/weisiger-carroll-house-94000454/"}
