Hanes for Alvin S. and Helen Keys.","why_significant":"The house is presented as one of Springfield's best examples of 20th-century suburban Colonial Revival architecture in its late asymmetrical form. Its large scale, design quality, good proportions and exceptional integrity place it among the best suburban residences of its class. It also reflects the 1920s growth of automobile-oriented suburbs around Springfield's country club.","narrative":"Built in 1929-30 on a nearly three-acre lot across from the Illini Country Club in Leland Grove, this two-and-one-half-story Colonial Revival house was designed by Springfield architect Murray S. Hanes for insurance agent and county official Alvin S. Keys and his wife Helen. The T-shaped wood-frame house has clapboard siding, a brick foundation, undressed limestone chimneys and a garage at basement level. Exterior ornament is deliberately restrained to emphasize a more elaborate front entrance, a common 1920s convention. Inside, the curving staircase, painted woodwork and original wood floors survive. Landscape designer Virginia Prince laid out the grounds. The house has had only two owners, and Keys lived there from 1930 until 1979 and made few changes. It was listed for its architecture, as one of Springfield's finest suburban Colonial Revival homes, with high design quality and unusually complete original character, both inside and out.","period_of_significance":"1929-30","architect_builder":"Hanes, Murray S.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent physical condition and strikingly unchanged from its 1930 appearance; still a single-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.402948-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/8940/28894018/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94000432.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000432/41b500ff65-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000432/41b500ff65-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jim Roberts","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alvin_S._Keys_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Roberts</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alvin_S._Keys_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894018","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_S._Keys_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462739"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/sangamon-county/keys-alvin-s-house-94000432/"}
