Farnum.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion C in architecture as an impressive example of Georgian Revival institutional architecture in Cleveland. Its tall spire is the highest built feature in the neighborhood, and it is one of the major Georgian Revival buildings on the near west side. It also incorporates a 1908 Sunday School annex and carved elements from its Victorian Gothic predecessor.","narrative":"Archwood United Church of Christ, originally Archwood Congregational Church, is a red brick, L-shaped church at 2800 Archwood Avenue in Cleveland's Brooklyn Centre neighborhood. Built in 1928-29 to designs by Daniel S. Farnum, a church member who had earlier worked with the Cleveland firm of Lehman and Schmitt, it is finished in the Georgian Revival style. A four-column portico with a pediment fronts the sanctuary, and a tall copper-clad steeple rises above it, the highest built feature in the neighborhood. Large modified Palladian windows light a sanctuary decorated with delicate cast plaster ornament. Farnum wrapped Georgian Revival fronts around a 1908 Sunday School wing and kept a carved sandstone figure, baptismal font and organ from the earlier Victorian Gothic church. The congregation dates to 1819 and is described as the oldest Congregational church in Cuyahoga County. The building was listed for its architectural merit and remains little altered.","period_of_significance":"1928-29","architect_builder":"Farnum, Daniel","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (described in the text as Georgian Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use and described as surviving with very few alterations and no additions since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.035323-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/94000416.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000416/9939853f8f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000416/9939853f8f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cricchetti","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Archwood_Congregational_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Cricchetti</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Archwood_Congregational_Church.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000238","name":"Brooklyn Centre Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/brooklyn-centre-historic-district-99000238/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987367","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archwood_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4787375"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/archwood-congregational-church-94000416/"}
