Mundell for the 14th Regiment.","why_significant":"It is presented as an outstanding, highly intact late nineteenth century National Guard armory in New York State. It embodies the armory building type in function, plan (administration building with attached drill shed) and fortress-like design, and it is tied to National Guard and American military history.","narrative":"Completed in 1893 on the west side of Eighth Avenue in Brooklyn, this massive armory was built for the 14th Regiment, once known as the Brooklyn Chasseurs and nicknamed the \"Red-legged Devils\" for their red Zouave uniforms. William A. Mundell designed it in a castellated style, with red brick walls on a bluestone base, asymmetrical towers, a machicolated cornice and a round-arched sally port. A two-story administration building connects to a barrel-vaulted drill shed. The interior retains chestnut paneling, pressed-metal ceilings, Corinthian columns and a stained-glass window attributed to Louis Comfort Tiffany. It was listed as an outstanding example of a late nineteenth century National Guard armory, serving as both a military facility and a social clubhouse, and as a civic monument to the volunteer militia's role in American military history. It remains in National Guard use, with part of the building also serving as a homeless shelter.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":"William Mundell","architectural_style":"Late Victorian; Castellated","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still serving as a National Guard facility, with secondary use as a homeless shelter; the interior survives with a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.250293-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000367.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000367/df4e17c488-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000367/df4e17c488-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:14th_Regiment_Armory_South_Slope.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:14th_Regiment_Armory_South_Slope.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313313","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14th_Regiment_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5349089"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/eighth-avenue-14th-regiment-armory-94000367/"}
