It is built into a hillside so animals and vehicles could reach the second floor.","why_significant":"The barn is considered locally significant under Criterion C for architecture in the context of Sunol's development from 1860 to 1910. It is one of only two stone structures in the area and the most significant agricultural building ever built there. It is also a bank barn, a type rare in California, and the only surviving building tied to Bachelder, who shaped the town.","narrative":"Built in 1888 beside Sinbad Creek on Kilkare Road in Sunol, this two-and-a-half story sandstone barn was built into a hillside so horses and vehicles could reach both floors. Its honey-colored walls, about three feet thick, were cut from stones taken from the creek and left rough, with quarry marks still visible. Brick relieving arches top the symmetrical openings, and a cement plaque in the cross gable bears the initials of original owner Thomas Foxwell Bachelder and the date. Bachelder was a San Francisco lawyer who subdivided his large Sunol ranch in 1884, donated land for the church, and built the Hazel Glen Hotel. The barn is one of only two stone buildings in the area and the most significant agricultural building there. After years of vacancy, it was converted in the 1970s to a residence and auto body shop. The stone exterior was kept intact, while the interior, roof and rear wall were rebuilt.","period_of_significance":"1888","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: 19th century stone barn (bank barn)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Converted in the 1970s after long vacancy; now used as a family residence on the upper floors with a custom auto body shop on the first floor.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.296935-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/94000359.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000359/f42b4e6f77-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000359/f42b4e6f77-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Foxwell_Bachelder_Barn_(Sunol,_CA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Foxwell_Bachelder_Barn_(Sunol,_CA).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"10000843","name":"Niles Canyon Transcontinental Railroad Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/niles-canyon-transcontinental-railroad-historic-district-10000843/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858147","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Foxwell_Bachelder_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123232300"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/bachelder-thomas-foxwell-barn-94000359/"}
