It covers 19.7 acres and has 84 resources, mostly 19th and early 20th century buildings.","why_significant":"The district reflects the growth of St. Clairsville as a county seat and commercial center on the National Road. Its early Federal residences, post-1866 fire commercial blocks, and the 1884 courthouse show the town's development from settlement through the early twentieth century. It also illustrates a wide range of architectural styles.","narrative":"Downtown St. Clairsville, Ohio, is preserved as a historic district of 19.7 acres along Main Street, which follows the old National Road (US Route 40). Of its 84 resources, 64 contribute to its character. The core is a stretch of two- and three-story masonry commercial buildings, many rebuilt after an 1866 fire destroyed much of Main Street. The 1884 Belmont County Courthouse, designed by Columbus architect Joseph Warren Yost, dominates the center, with an adjoining jail and sheriff's residence. Commercial buildings such as the Jenkins Building, the 1894 Gazette Building, the 1889 Clarendon Hotel and the Art Deco Masonic Building show Romanesque, Italianate and other styles. Federal-style brick houses from about 1815 to 1850 line the eastern edge. The district was recognized for its role in the town's growth as a trading center linked to the National Road and for the range of architecture it preserves, despite later siding and storefront changes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joseph Warren Yost (Columbus architect, Belmont County Courthouse and jail)","architectural_style":"Romanesque, Federal, Italianate, Classical Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Courthouse, specialty stores and single dwellings remain in use; many buildings have altered storefronts or modern siding.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.202719-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/94000246.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000246/02e8d137d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000246/02e8d137d4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Downtown_St_Clairsville_Ohio.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Downtown_St_Clairsville_Ohio.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986803","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clairsville_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7587592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/belmont-county/st-clairsville-historic-district-94000246/"}
