It played a prominent role in Cleveland's growth as an industrial city in the late 19th century and in the history of Great Lakes shipping. Steam engines for lake vessels were built here, close to the river, dry docks and suppliers.","narrative":"Built around 1890 in Cleveland's industrial Flats, this four-story L-shaped brick building at Center Street and Spruce Avenue housed the engine works of the Globe Iron Works Company, which made steam engines for Great Lakes vessels. It has red-orange brick street facades, segmental arched windows with stone lintels, a modest corbelled cornice and a wood post, beam and joist interior. The site was close to the Cuyahoga River, Lake Erie, railroads and supplier industries. Globe built the Onoko, the first compartmentalized iron-hulled freighter on the Lakes, in 1882 and the steel-hulled Spokane in 1886. In 1899 the firm merged into the American Ship Building Company, which used this building as a pattern shop and engine plant. Later tenants included makers of storm windows and cleaning chemicals. It was listed for its role in Cleveland's industrial and shipping history. The building has been empty since the late 1980s and has lost much of its original window and ground-floor detail.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890-1942","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th Century Functional Industrial Building","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Vacant since Hadco Corporation left in the late 1980s; windows are covered with plywood and the ground-floor arched openings stand empty or have been filled in.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.223858-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/94000245.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000245/ca1353d3ca-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000245/ca1353d3ca-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Globe_Iron_Works_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Globe_Iron_Works_Building.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987899","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137711788"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/globe-iron-works-building-94000245/"}
