It is the only cobblestone house in the city of Mentor and the most outstanding surviving work of its builder, John Yager.","narrative":"This 1 1/2 story bungalow at 7612 South Center Street in Mentor, Ohio, was built in 1911 by John Yager, a local stonemason who laid its walls himself. The first-floor walls and porch columns are cobblestone, set off by a smooth stone watertable and string course, with stucco on the gables. A full-width inset porch and a low shed dormer centered over the entry mark it as a dormer-front bungalow. Inside, the original brick fireplace, arched doorways, woodwork and staircase remain. A garage, two cobblestone corner columns at the sidewalk, and a filled-in cobblestone-lined fishpond also survive. The house was listed for its architecture. It shows the low, horizontal lines, natural materials and mixed wall surfaces typical of early twentieth-century bungalows, and it is the only cobblestone house in Mentor. Yager's other known work includes cobblestone porches, foundations and driveway markers nearby, but this house is his finest example.","period_of_significance":"1911","architect_builder":"Yager, John (builder)","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form says the house and its setting retain a high degree of integrity, with the only notable alteration being removal of the roof brackets when the soffits were covered with aluminum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:06.969115-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/94000240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000240/ecf0f42a49-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000240/ecf0f42a49-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Carrie_Yager_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Carrie_Yager_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989543","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138448611"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/yager-john-and-carrie-house-94000240/"}
