It centers on a mid-19th-century log farmhouse expanded by the Kellenbergers from about 1921 to 1944, with a landscaped park, lake and recreation structures.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the estate is significant for recreation and social history as a wealthy couple's country retreat with a lake, boathouse, pool and picnic areas. It is also significant for landscape architecture and architecture, with a naturalized, Arts and Crafts-influenced landscape and a log house with Colonial Revival additions. Much of the 1921-1944 landscape and its structures remain intact.","narrative":"Miramichi, the Kellenberger Estate, is a wooded, landscaped tract of about 33 acres southeast of Greensboro. Beginning about 1921, the Kellenbergers took over a farm with a mid-19th-century log farmhouse and reshaped it into a country retreat. They added dormers, service wings and a large rear addition to the house, and built recreation features around a lake first dammed about 1915. The grounds include stone grottos made from local fieldstone, a curved concrete pool with spillway, two brick-paved picnic areas with fireplaces, a rustic two-story boathouse, a children's swimming pool, and naturalized plantings of dogwood, magnolia and wisteria. Three outbuildings, a tenant house, a chicken house and a log doghouse, also survive. The estate was listed as a district for its role in recreation and social life of the period and for its naturalistic landscape design, influenced by English garden writers. The house remains a residence, though some lakeside facilities have deteriorated.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1921-1944","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Other: Arts and Crafts","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house is in use as a single-family residence in excellent condition.
