Its second-floor west bedroom holds original polychrome wall stenciling from about 1828 by Stephen Watkins Clark, the only known surviving example of his work. The house also retains much original woodwork, plaster, and timber framing.","narrative":"Built about 1794 at what is now 210 North Main Street in Naples, New York, this two-story, five-bay frame house was the home of Ephraim Cleveland, a Massachusetts militia captain who helped found the town. In 1789 he and several partners bought the township that became Naples, and the settlers arrived in 1790. The house is described as the first frame dwelling in the village. It has a central chimney, clapboard siding, a heavy timber frame, symmetrical windows, and an elliptical-fanlight front entrance. A rear kitchen wing was added in the 1840s or 1850s. Inside, original trim, doors, fireplaces, plaster walls, and a spiral stair survive. The west upstairs bedroom is covered in red, green, blue, and black stenciling on a gray ground, done around 1828 by Stephen Watkins Clark, who later became a noted educator and textbook author. The property also includes a historic fieldstone wall and a modern carriage barn. The house is still a private residence.","period_of_significance":"1794-1828","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family residence, historically and currently.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.54984-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000047.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000047/6fa6851506-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000047/6fa6851506-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blake Kritzberg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ephraim-cleveland-house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Blake Kritzberg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ephraim-cleveland-house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320495","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephraim_Cleveland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5382251"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/cleveland-ephraim-house-94000047/"}
