It also reflects the transportation and commercial development of Wilmington (Criterion A), serving as an inn, tavern, warehouse and store for travelers, farmers and mill customers. It is the oldest documented commercial building remaining in the Wilmington area.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Water and Baltimore Streets in Wilmington, Illinois, this L-shaped complex grew in three stages between about 1837 and 1843. The oldest part is a rubble limestone warehouse facing the mill race. Next came a brick inn with Federal-style symmetry and touches of Greek Revival detail, followed by a taller brick section with a commercial storefront and rooms above. Over the years it housed an inn, general stores, boarding rooms and apartments, and the First National Bank of Wilmington opened in the storefront in 1863. It later served as a local historical society museum. Its listing rests on its value as a surviving example of mid-19th century construction and as an early marker of the town's commerce and transportation, which served stagecoach and canalboat travelers and mill customers. A November 1990 fire damaged about one-sixth of the complex, yet the exterior retains much of its original character. The building has been vacant since that fire.","period_of_significance":"Architecture 1837-c. 1920s; Transportation 1837-1943","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century; Federal and Greek Revival influences","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacated since a severe fire in November 1990; the fire-damaged building was open to the weather while stabilization and restoration plans were being prepared.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.358456-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/8943/28894347/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94000021.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000021/bc3332f805-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000021/bc3332f805-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"publichall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagle_Hotel_1837_%26_8.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">publichall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagle_Hotel_1837_%26_8.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894347","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Hotel_(Wilmington,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5325124"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/will-county/eagle-hotel-94000021/"}
