Its height is unusual in Grafton, where later examples of the type are two stories. It also retains a good degree of integrity despite a modern rear wing.","narrative":"Built around 1840 at 25 East Main Street in Grafton, Illinois, this one and one-half story house is made of native limestone and follows the Side Hall Plan, with an entrance in the far left bay leading straight to a staircase. It was the home of D.C. Slaten, the first mayor of Grafton after the city's incorporation in 1836. George \"Frenchy\" LaMarsh later bought it, and it stayed in the LaMarsh family until the 1950s. Barns behind the house, now gone, held his livery stable and a horse-drawn ambulance service. The house was listed for its architecture. Its stonework dates from the earliest local use of limestone, and the facade is slightly more squared than the side walls, which gives a quoin-like effect at the corners. Details such as the recessed entry, transom and molded architrave hint at Greek Revival style. A modern rear wing was added, and the house was used as an art gallery before the 1993 flood damaged its interior.","period_of_significance":"c. 1840","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century; Other: Side Hall Plan (details hint at Greek Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as an art gallery before the Great Flood of 1993; the interior was flood-damaged and the building was in transition during flood recovery.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.624599-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/8911/28891188/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94000018.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000018/27e0b0be73-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000018/27e0b0be73-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wikigaurabia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LaMarsh_house_grafton.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikigaurabia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LaMarsh_house_grafton.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891188","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaten-LaMarsh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900288"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/jersey-county/slaten-lamarsh-house-94000018/"}
