The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an excellent example of Classical Revival architecture and the only one in Grafton where the style is fully expressed on a commercial building. Its elaborate terra cotta entrance and full Doric entablature remain intact. It also represents the commercial rebuilding of Main Street after the 1912 fire.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at 225 East Main Street in Grafton, this one-story bank building was part of the rebuilding of Main Street after a great fire in December 1912. Its buff brick walls rest on a limestone foundation, and the narrow front is dominated by cream terra cotta detail: pilasters with entasis, cornucopia in the spandrels, a Diocletian window above the entry, and a full Doric entablature inscribed \"GRAFTON BANK.\" It is the only building in Grafton where Classical Revival style is fully expressed on a commercial structure. Inside, one large banking room, oak woodwork, wood floors and a Mosler walk-in safe survive. The bank reportedly closed around 1935-36 during the Great Depression and never reopened. Later occupants included a utility company and an antique shop. The building was listed for its architectural quality and its high degree of integrity, with its terra cotta intact and interior spaces much as originally arranged.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently for sale and used by the Salvation Army for storage and flood relief efforts; the form reports high integrity of the exterior and public interior space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.259063-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/80/8911/28891180/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94000016.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000016/d0bfebb58b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000016/d0bfebb58b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wikigaurabia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_grafton.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikigaurabia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_grafton.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891180","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafton_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16975234"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/jersey-county/grafton-bank-94000016/"}
