The church was built in 1765 and enlarged and remodeled around 1843, on a lot of about one acre.","why_significant":"The church is argued to be a rare surviving example of mid-eighteenth century ecclesiastical architecture in Suffolk County and a distinguished example of vernacular Colonial architecture. It keeps its heavy timber frame, rectangular form, central tower, wide wood shingles and minimal ornamentation. Its cemetery of about 100 graves and its links to the Nicoll family recall the early development of Islip.","narrative":"Set well back from Montauk Highway in Oakdale, this small one-story church with a gable roof, wood shingle siding and an engaged three-story tower dates to 1765. It began as a private chapel for the Nicoll family, who held a large manor nearby, and also served enslaved people, free Indians and neighbors. Originally called the Charlotte Church, it took its present name after the Revolution. Around 1843 it was enlarged from two bays to three and given Greek Revival trim, and a stained-glass chancel window was added in 1873. Regular services lapsed after about 1875, the church reopened as a summer wayside chapel in 1928, and a restoration followed in 1962. Its heavy timber frame and wide shingle sheathing reflect Long Island's English-derived building tradition. The surrounding cemetery holds about 100 burials, the last in 1916. Together they mark the early settlement of Islip and are among the town's most significant local landmarks.","period_of_significance":"1765 - 1916","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial/Postmedieval English; Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility and cemetery; restored in 1962, with a modern sacristy added at that time.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.068182-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93001559.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001559/2538bfadea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001559/2538bfadea-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint_John%27s_Episcopal_Church_%26_Cemetery_(Oakdale,_New_York).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint_John%27s_Episcopal_Church_%26_Cemetery_(Oakdale,_New_York).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322268","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Johns_Episcopal_Church_and_Cemetery_(Oakdale,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7589010"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/st-johns-episcopal-church-and-cemetery-93001559/"}
