The drill shed, designed by Tachau & Vought, has medieval-inspired sandstone entrance hoods and three tiers of balconies seating 6,000 to 7,000. The administration building, by Van Wart & Wein, has a buff terra cotta parapet with chevron designs and stylized eagles, iron window grilles decorated with stars and maces, and a massive sandstone sally port. The armory was built for the 369th Regiment, the only New York National Guard unit made up solely of African-Americans. During World War I the regiment served with the French Army and was the first all-black unit sent into battle on foreign soil; its members were known as the Harlem Hell Fighters. The building also represents the early twentieth century state armory type, with a military and social function, an administration building joined to a drill shed, and a design that moved away from castle-like forms. Its interior survives largely intact.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1915 - ca. 1933","architect_builder":"Drill shed: Tachau & Vought; Administration building: Van Wart & Wein","architectural_style":"Early Twentieth Century: Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as an armory (defense), and the interior is described as substantially intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.841844-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93001537.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001537/a6738cb642-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001537/a6738cb642-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:369_Armory_front_partsun_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:369_Armory_front_partsun_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313869","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/369th_Regiment_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4635701"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/369th-regiment-armory-93001537/"}
