Amaza Lee Meredith designed it in 1938 as her own home, and it was completed in 1939.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Azurest South is one of Virginia's few mature examples of the International Style. It is also an important landmark of African-American design, as the work of Amaza Lee Meredith, one of the nation's few black female architects. Its austere exterior is paired with vividly colored, personalized interiors.","narrative":"Azurest South is a compact white house beside the Virginia State University campus, designed in 1938 by art professor Amaza Lee Meredith as her own residence and completed in 1939 by Petersburg contractor Russell Holmes. Built of stuccoed concrete block, it has a flat roof terrace, curved corners lit by glass-block windows, turquoise-blue metal trim and no applied ornament, all set in a wooded, grassy dell. Inside, Meredith used bold color and pattern, including mosaic kitchen counters, colored carrara glass in the bathroom and vinyl tile floors. Meredith lived there with her companion, Dr. Edna Meade Colson, and altered it in the 1950s by converting the garage to a studio and adding a carport. The house is considered significant as one of Virginia's few mature International Style residences and as the work of one of the nation's few black female architects. It has been unoccupied for nearly a decade but remains largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1938-1943","architect_builder":"Meredith, Amaza Lee; Holmes, Russell (contractor)","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: International Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Unoccupied for nearly a decade but in good condition without significant alteration; current function listed as clubhouse.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.814042-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/6801/41680146/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93001464.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001464/0d34fb9a7d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001464/0d34fb9a7d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"AJ Belongia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AzurestSouthView1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">AJ Belongia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AzurestSouthView1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680146","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azurest_South","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4833109"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/chesterfield-county/azurest-south-93001464/"}
