Its brick main house was built in the early nineteenth century and remodeled in Colonial Revival style in 1907-1908.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Loretta is one of the finest Colonial Revival houses in its area, showing how an early-nineteenth-century farmhouse became an elegant mansion. It also records the early twentieth century, when prominent and wealthy owners made it a working farm. Little has changed since the 1913 portico was added.","narrative":"Loretta is a seventy-six-acre farm north of Warrenton in Fauquier County, Virginia, centered on a brick mansion that began as a two-story, single-pile house built in the early nineteenth century by Frances Edmonds, widow of Colonel Elias Edmonds. Later owners added a frame rear wing. In 1907-1908 John and Cornelia Gaines rebuilt the house in the Colonial Revival style, replacing the frame wing with brick, raising the roof for a third floor, and adding dormers, French doors, a fanlight entrance and a new staircase. No architect is recorded. In 1913 the Finley family added a two-story Ionic portico, slightly off-center on the front. Only a cooking hearth, two Federal mantels and a brick smokehouse survive from the earliest period. Early twentieth-century barns, a corncrib and two tenant houses show its working-farm role. Because little has changed since 1913, the house and its outbuildings keep their integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1800-1913","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The remaining buildings are described as in excellent condition and retaining integrity; the main house is a single dwelling, and the tenant houses serve as employee quarters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.917758-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/6805/41680599/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93001442.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001442/74fbc338b9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001442/74fbc338b9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LORETTA,_WARRENTON,_FAUQUIER_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680599","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loretta_(Warrenton,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712747"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/loretta-93001442/"}
