It stands beside a historic river crossing, Berry's Ferry.","why_significant":"It is a noteworthy example of the stone domestic architecture of the lower Shenandoah Valley, blending vernacular traditions (I-house plan, rugged stone, simple ornament) with Georgian proportions and Federal woodwork. It has had few major alterations and keeps much early fabric. The property also has a rare three-part slave or servants' house.","narrative":"Overlooking Berry's Ferry, a historic crossing of the Shenandoah River in Clarke County, Virginia, this limestone rubble house was probably built around 1820, possibly for William Nelson Burwell, son of Nathaniel Burwell of Carter Hall. Its five-bay facades, center-passage I-house plan and thick walls combine local building traditions with Georgian proportions. Inside, much plain Federal woodwork survives, including mantels, a closed-string stair, original doors with early box locks and heart pine trim. A one-and-a-half-story frame wing replaced an earlier wing lost to fire in 1949. The grounds retain a rare three-part servants' or slave house and a stone smokehouse. The site lay on the Ashby's Gap Turnpike, and Stonewall Jackson's troops crossed here in July 1861. The property stayed with Burwell family members for generations and later served as a restaurant and retreat. It is now an inn and residence on seventeen acres, valued for its architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":"1820-1865","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Maintained in excellent condition and used as a bed and breakfast inn as well as a residence; the servants' house is used for storage and is in fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.520207-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/6802/41680202/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93001440.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001440/3c04faee61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001440/3c04faee61-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RIVER_HOUSE,_MILLWOOD,_CLARKE_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680202","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_House_(Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713138"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/river-house-93001440/"}
