It was completed in 1886.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criteria A and C. It reflects the wool-based prosperity that Harrison County enjoyed in the late 19th century and that supported Cadiz's economy. It is also described as the only notable commercial Queen Anne building in Cadiz's business district, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1886 at the main intersection of Cadiz's business district, this two-story red brick building was constructed for the Harrison National Bank. It combines Queen Anne details with a practical commercial form: pressed brick string courses, brick corner pilasters, a corbeled cornice, segmental arch windows and a chamfered corner entrance beneath a stone portico on polished granite columns. Inside, carved wood door and window surrounds and steel vaults survive. The bank was funded largely by the wealth of Harrison County's wool growers, since the county was among Ohio's leading wool producers in the late 1800s. The bank traced its roots to a branch of the State Bank of Ohio founded in 1841, and it operated in this building until the Depression. After a 1931 sale, the building housed a realty office, a savings and loan and a restaurant. It has been vacant since the late 1960s. The top of the cornice parapet has been lost, but the building is considered the most intact 19th-century structure on the commercial streetscape.","period_of_significance":"1886-1931","architect_builder":"Hamilton, Charles P.","architectural_style":"Queen Anne (commercial Queen Anne)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The form says the former bank has been vacant since Coffey's restaurant closed in the late 1960s. It reports some recent water damage to floors and ceilings, and its current function is listed as work in progress.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.175722-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/93001438.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001438/2666b27638-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001438/2666b27638-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harrison_County_Bank_Cadiz_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harrison_County_Bank_Cadiz_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989314","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_National_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5665766"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/harrison-county/harrison-national-bank-93001438/"}
