It also symbolizes the link between the college and the town. It is one of a small number of impressive stone buildings and structures built in Brevard between 1915 and 1943.","narrative":"Along North Broad Street and French Broad Avenue in Brevard, a long stone wall wraps the southwest corner of the Brevard College campus. Built in 1936-1937 by the Works Progress Administration, it enclosed a new college athletic field. Local tradition holds that students and workmen gathered the yellow and grey river rock from the Davidson River. The wall runs about 222 feet on one street and 252 feet on the other, with blind sections between square piers, and a diagonal arcaded gate with three segmental-arched openings joins the two arms. The college opened in 1934 on the grounds of the former Brevard Institute, and this fence and gate is the earliest surviving structure built specifically for it. The athletic facilities have since moved to the northeast part of the campus, leaving the wall as a reminder of the college's early years and of the ties between students and townspeople. It is also an example of the stone construction that marked Brevard between 1915 and 1943.","period_of_significance":"1936-1937","architect_builder":"Unknown (erected by the Works Progress Administration)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movement/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as unaltered, though about thirty-three feet at the southeastern end was removed at some past time; the former athletic field inside is now lawn.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.970142-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/7184/47718487/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/93001436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001436/0b9bb1c5ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001436/0b9bb1c5ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Guambabybell","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brevard_College_Stone_Fence_and_Gate_2012-09-08_18-58-51.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Guambabybell</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brevard_College_Stone_Fence_and_Gate_2012-09-08_18-58-51.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718487","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brevard_College_Stone_Fence_and_Gate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19986545"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/brevard-college-stone-fence-and-gate-93001436/"}
