The buildings are undated but are believed to be mid- to late eighteenth century.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be architecturally significant as a rare, remarkably intact group of eighteenth-century vernacular farm buildings tied to tenant farming in the Hudson Highlands. The farmhouse shows the Dutch vernacular profile and massing, the barn is an unusual Dutch barn for the Highlands, and the mill retains much of its early machinery. The buildings were recorded by HABS in 1934.","narrative":"Set among the fairways of a golf course near Garrison Four Corners, this 13.4-acre district preserves a small eighteenth-century farm complex from the Hudson Highlands. It includes a one-and-a-half-story frame farmhouse with a steeply pitched Dutch-style roof, a roughly fifty-foot-square Dutch barn with large H-frame bents, a two-and-a-half-story heavy timber grist mill, and a quarried stone dam that creates a millpond. Exact construction dates are unknown, but the buildings are thought to date from the mid- to late eighteenth century, possibly connected to the tenant farm established by Jacob Mandeville on Philipse family land. The group was listed for architecture because such intact collections are rare in the mid-Hudson region, and a Dutch barn is unusual in the Highlands. The farmhouse and mill were documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934. The mill is now deteriorated, though much of its milling equipment remains in the attic and basement.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1740-1898","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Farmhouse: Colonial/Dutch Colonial; Dutch barn, grist mill and dam: No style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The farmhouse is used as a greenskeeper's lodge and the barn for equipment repair and storage. The grist mill is deteriorated and listed as vacant/not in use, with a small apartment inserted after World War II. The district sits on a golf course.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.069445-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93001434.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001434/cf36ab873e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001434/cf36ab873e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garrison_Grist_Mill_cottage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garrison_Grist_Mill_cottage.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321030","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrison_Grist_Mill_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5524039"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/garrison-grist-mill-historic-district-93001434/"}
