A. A. Cook was the architect and E. A. Bovyer the builder.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for social history as the town's main fraternal hall, used by the Odd Fellows, Masons and Eastern Star. It also claims architectural significance as the most distinguished and prominent building in Wheatland and one of its oldest surviving non-residential 19th-century buildings.","narrative":"Standing on the southeast corner of Fourth and Front Streets in downtown Wheatland, this two-story brick building was constructed in 1898-1899 to replace an Odd Fellows hall destroyed by fire. A. A. Cook designed it and E. A. Bovyer built it. The front and south walls carry white-painted stucco added in 1903 to hide fire damage, while the rear brick is exposed. Pilasters, elliptical window arches, leaded glass and a dentil cornice give it Italianate and Classical character. The second floor holds the Masonic meeting hall, dining hall and kitchen, and the ground floor has two storefronts. For decades it served the Odd Fellows, Masons and Eastern Star, hosting lodge meetings, socials, funerals and church services, and it also housed a justice court and a stationery store that ran the local telephone exchange from 1907 to 1948. Taller and more elaborate than its neighbors, it remains one of the town's oldest and best preserved buildings, on its original site and in its original use.","period_of_significance":"1898-1943","architect_builder":"Cook, A.A., Architect; Bovyer, E.A, Builder","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a Masonic meeting hall on the second floor, with a hair salon and dental office on the ground floor; described as in good physical condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.944682-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/93001396.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001396/7888883c4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93001396/7888883c4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"T71024","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheatland_Masonic_Temple.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">T71024</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheatland_Masonic_Temple.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862435","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatland_Masonic_Temple","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7991898"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/yuba-county/wheatland-masonic-temple-93001396/"}
