S. Chapman & Sons for Robert Dilworth, with a carriage house and chicken coop on the property.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be locally significant under Criterion C as an excellent example of the front-gabled Italianate subtype in Vermont. It was built for Robert Dilworth, a farmer, banker and businessman whose brickworks supplied bricks for many local buildings. It retains many Italianate features, including brackets, wide eaves, arched windows and porches.","narrative":"Built in 1872 for Robert Dilworth, this two-story brick house stands at 606 East Fifth Street on the eastern edge of Vermont, Illinois. It is a front-gabled Italianate dwelling with a gable roof, wide bracketed eaves, arched windows with brick keystones, a polygonal window bay, and decorative wood porches at the front and rear. The bricks were made on site; Dilworth, a farmer, banker and businessman, owned a brickyard that supplied material for many buildings in town. Inside, the house keeps its Italianate woodwork, plaster medallions, walnut stairways, tall ceilings and arched pocket doors. A wood carriage house from 1872, later altered into a garage, and a 1924 chicken coop stand nearby but do not contribute to the listing. The house was recognized for its architecture, as an excellent local example of the front-gabled Italianate type, built when many large Italianate and Second Empire homes were rising in Vermont. After sitting empty for six years, it is being rehabilitated.","period_of_significance":"1872","architect_builder":"S. S.
