Vanderbilt estates. It shows French-inspired design features and retains its original form, materials and interior finishes. It is considered locally significant in architecture.","narrative":"This small clapboard house on U.S. Route 9 in Hyde Park began life around 1876 as the gatehouse of Walter Langdon's estate. It is one and one-half stories with two bays, a kitchen wing, steeply pitched slate hipped roofs, round-headed dormers, iron finials and decorative chimney pots, all reflecting French-inspired design. The east front has paired French doors under transoms and a full-length porch. It is believed to have been designed by Boston architects John H. Sturgis and Charles Brigham, who also planned a gardener's cottage and tool house for Langdon in 1875. After Frederick Vanderbilt bought the estate in 1895, he built a new gatehouse, and in 1898 this one was moved fifty yards south to its present lot. It keeps its original roof line, walls, windows, doors, floor plan, mantels, staircase and hardwood floors. These qualities make it a representative example of a late-nineteenth-century estate outbuilding and a distinctive local resource.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1876-1898 (as amended by the Keeper; the form itself lists ca. 1876)","architect_builder":"Believed to be designed by architects John H.
