It is one of the few surviving pre-Revolutionary dwellings in Hyde Park and probably the earliest of only two stone colonial dwellings in the town. It retains its original location, design, materials and fine craftsmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1769 by George Rymph, a filemaker from Wittenburg, Germany, this stone farmhouse on US Route 9 in Hyde Park is one of the town's earliest surviving homes. Rymph settled in 1768 and bought 215 acres from Dr. John Bard, later expanding the farm to about 600 acres. The house is one and a half stories with three bays and a center-hall plan, built of uncoursed fieldstone with clapboard gable ends and brick end chimneys. The date 1769 and the initials GR are carved in the lintel over the front door. Around 1850 a Gothic-style dormer, bracketed eaves and arched attic windows were added. The Dominican Fathers bought the property in 1914 and added one-story wings. Inside, hand-hewn ceiling beams, wide floorboards, early plaster and an original staircase survive. It was listed for architecture as a rare intact vernacular farmhouse of Hyde Park's early settlement. The boundary covers only the house and its ground.","period_of_significance":"1769-ca.1850","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by George Rymph, an early settler)","architectural_style":"Colonial (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the Dominican Fathers acquired it in 1914 and used it as a gatehouse/caretaker's cottage after 1927.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.608792-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000863.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000863/763f5d9d83-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000863/763f5d9d83-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Rymph_House,_Hyde_Park,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Rymph_House,_Hyde_Park,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317464","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Rymph_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5544130"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/rymph-george-house-93000863/"}
