Beardsley.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a representative, well-preserved example of a small turn-of-the-century firehouse with Renaissance Revival details such as arched openings and a heavy cast-iron cornice. It is also significant for its public role in housing two volunteer fire companies and providing a hall for community gatherings.","narrative":"Built in 1902 on Post Road in Hyde Park, this three-story brick firehouse brought together two volunteer companies, Eagle Engine and Rescue Hook and Ladder, which had previously occupied separate quarters. Town taxes paid for the $6,094 building, designed by Poughkeepsie architect William J. Beardsley. It has wide engine bays on the ground floor, round-arched and rectangular windows, a heavy cast-iron cornice and bas relief decoration above the third-story windows, all drawing on Renaissance Revival styling. The third floor held a large meeting hall used for dances and public functions. Franklin D. Roosevelt was a member of the Eagle Company. The companies remained separate until 1958, and a new firehouse opened in 1961 because modern trucks could not fit through the old doors. The building was then converted to offices and apartments. Its facade remains well preserved apart from the engine bay doors and the missing belfry, and it is valued as a small, early twentieth-century firehouse.","period_of_significance":"1902","architect_builder":"William J.
