McKim of McKim, Mead and White. It sits on a bluff above the Hudson River on five and a half acres.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact example of a late nineteenth century country house and of Colonial Revival design as interpreted by McKim. It was part of the complex McKim designed for Frederick W. Vanderbilt's estate. It retains its original location, setting, design, materials and interior features.","narrative":"Built in 1896 at 23 West Market Street in Hyde Park, this brick Colonial Revival house was designed by Charles F. McKim of McKim, Mead and White for Frederick W. Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt built it on his newly acquired estate as a home for Edward Wales, a friend and secretary, a yachtsman who lived there until 1922. After Vanderbilt's death in 1938 the house and its five and a half acres were separated from the estate and left to the estate superintendent, Herbert C. Shears. The two-story house has a shingled gable roof, pedimented dormers, a modillioned cornice, an off-center entrance and a balustraded porch. Its restrained design contrasts with the grand neighboring Vanderbilt Mansion. The original windows, doors, room layout, mantels and staircases survive. The house is valued as an intact example of McKim's reinterpretation of Colonial styles and as a surviving part of the Vanderbilt estate.","period_of_significance":"1898","architect_builder":"McKim, Charles F., Architect","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current use is single dwelling, the same as its historic function; the house retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.586184-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000858.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000858/1df47f2252-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000858/1df47f2252-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wales_House,_Hyde_Park,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wales_House,_Hyde_Park,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317514","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales_House_(Hyde_Park,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7961772"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/wales-house-93000858/"}
