It sits on a 1.9-acre lot on a hilltop with a view of the Hudson River.","why_significant":"The house is significant as an example of late Federal architecture with later Italianate modifications and details, and it retains a high degree of exterior and interior integrity. It is also tied to the Roosevelt family: Isaac Roosevelt was Franklin Delano Roosevelt's grandfather, and John A. Roosevelt lived there later in the nineteenth century.","narrative":"Rosedale is a two-story, five-bay frame house built in 1832 on a hilltop in Hyde Park, overlooking the Hudson River. Isaac Roosevelt, a doctor and gentleman farmer, bought the land and built it. It is a late Federal design with a center-hall plan, symmetrical windows, Palladian attic windows, end chimneys and a gabled roof. Italianate additions include bracketed eaves, porches with chamfered posts, and projecting bays. Inside, original marble mantels, wide-board floors, moldings, doors and the staircase survive. After Isaac died in 1863, his son John A. Roosevelt inherited the estate and shaped the house's present appearance. John was a yachtsman who founded the Poughkeepsie Ice Yacht Club. Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent much of his childhood on the estate. The family held the property until 1954, when it was subdivided for suburban housing. The house now stands on 1.9 acres and remains a private home, listed for its architecture and its record of nineteenth-century building in Hyde Park.","period_of_significance":"ca.1832 - ca. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling.
