They are not architect-designed but are vernacular interpretations of Late Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Second Empire fashions, built by local Hudson Valley carpenters. Land along Main Street was parceled off from 1836 from a tract owned by Judge William W. Woodworth. The first owners were largely merchants and craftsmen, and later residents included workers tied to nearby estates such as the Vanderbilt and Rogers properties. Institutional buildings include the former Baptist Church, the former St. James Rectory, a former Methodist parsonage and the 1927 fieldstone James Roosevelt Memorial Library.
