It shows development from a Warren family tavern and farm settlement through a nineteenth-century milling hamlet to an early twentieth-century suburban community. Its houses, tavern, mill ruins, brook channels and abandoned turnpike roadbed illustrate that evolution.","narrative":"Indian Brook Road Historic District covers about 30 acres in Garrison, New York, where the hamlet of Nelson's Corners, first called Warren's, grew up at a meeting of three routes: the Old Albany Post Road, the Highland Turnpike and Indian Brook Road. John Warren built a house and tavern there after 1783, and his relative Samuel Warren's farmhouse dates from the same period. In the early 1800s Warren added a ballroom wing to the tavern and a grist mill on the brook, whose stone dam, channel walls and foundations survive. Further houses, including the narrow Federal-style house known as The Bend and the small Dutch Cottage, housed people working at the crossroads. The 1912 rerouting of Route 9 ended the hamlet's role as a crossroads and left an abandoned turnpike roadbed. The district includes eight contributing buildings, four sites and one structure, and the tavern still operates as an inn.","period_of_significance":"c1783-c1940","architect_builder":"John Warren (built the tavern/house and mill); Samuel Warren house attributed to the Warren family","architectural_style":"Early Republic; Mid-19th Century; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals (Federal-period vernacular houses)","criteria":[],"status_note":"The tavern (Bird and Bottle Inn) continues in its original use; the mill is in ruins, the school was demolished in 1992, and one parcel is vacant land containing a section of Indian Brook.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.241242-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000853.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000853/f14121d625-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000853/f14121d625-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Indian_Brook_Road,_Garrison,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Indian_Brook_Road,_Garrison,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321036","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Brook_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6019946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/indian-brook-road-historic-district-93000853/"}
