It replaced a wooden trestle and let heavier loads of grain, sand and cement products travel to Chicago. It is also the only multi-arch, stone-face rubble-fill bridge remaining in Winnebago County.","narrative":"Spanning South Kinnikinnick Creek just east of Roscoe, Illinois, this double-arch railroad bridge was built in 1882 for the Chicago & North Western Railway. Engineer Van Mienen designed it in dolomitic limestone with a rubble fill, and it measures 53 feet between abutments and 60 feet wide. The bridge replaced a wooden trestle destroyed by a creek flood in 1881. Its arch stones interlock to resist spreading, and an internal drainage system carries water out through ducts at the center pier. The bridge allowed heavier trains carrying grain, sand and cement products to reach Chicago markets, and it supported the local sand quarry trade. Ballast was added in 1900 to allow heavier loads. It is the only multi-arch, stone-face rubble-fill bridge left in Winnebago County. Little else of the railroad's local surroundings survives, and the bridge is slated for use as part of a nature trail for residents and visitors.","period_of_significance":"1882","architect_builder":"Mienen, Van, engineer; Chicago & North Western Railway, builder","architectural_style":"Other: Stone arch bridge","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Not altered except for some recent tuckpointing and an attempt to fill a crack in the southwest arch face; the owner is the Town of Roscoe, and a nature trail is planned for the bridge.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.049184-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/8944/28894431/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/93000840.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000840/6bf16695da-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000840/6bf16695da-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"TheCatalyst31","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:C%26NW_Stone_Arch_Bridge,_Roscoe,_IL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">TheCatalyst31</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:C%26NW_Stone_Arch_Bridge,_Roscoe,_IL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894431","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_%26_North_Western_Railway_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28125988"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/winnebago-county/chicago-and-north-western-railway-stone-arch-bridge-93000840/"}
