It has an unusual variation on a double-pile, central-passage plan and fine interior woodwork. The house and its original outbuildings have changed little and keep most of their integrity as a late-eighteenth-century residential complex.","narrative":"Lucky Hit is a farm of about 131 acres just east of White Post in Clarke County, Virginia. Its main house, a five-bay, two-story Federal-style dwelling of locally made brick, was built around 1791 by Colonel Richard Kidder Meade, who bought the surrounding 800-acre tract in 1783 and named it for his luck in turning timber and swampland into productive land. The house has pedimented gable ends, interior end chimneys, a modillion cornice and an unusual double-pile plan with an unlit rear stair passage. A brick summer kitchen and a wood-frame necessary survive from the original period. Later changes include a 1940s addition by Alexander Mackay-Smith, along with a barn, tenant house, gatehouse, tennis court and pool added in the twentieth century. The property was recognized for its architecture as one of the oldest surviving brick houses in the area, with much of its original character intact.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1791","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling and working farm; the interior was being rehabilitated at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.125737-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/6801/41680196/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93000834.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000834/4aecd3b9d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000834/4aecd3b9d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jweaver28","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lucky_hit.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jweaver28</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lucky_hit.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001133","name":"Greenway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/greenway-historic-district-93001133/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680196","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Hit","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6697914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/lucky-hit-93000834/"}
