Carpenter Theodore Bailey of Bailey's Crossroads built it on a cross plan, with wood siding, a bracketed cornice, nine-over-nine windows and a cupola atop a standing-seam metal roof. Residents of Glencarlyn, the county's first planned suburban subdivision, organized a stock association to fund it. Until about 1920 it served as the village's main gathering place, hosting the civic improvement association, Episcopal church services, dances, plays and holiday events. From the early 1920s until 1953 it was used as the Glencarlyn elementary school, then returned to the association, which deeded it to Arlington County in 1962. A kitchen addition, a furnace, plumbing and a new roof were added over the years. It still serves the neighborhood as a meeting hall and preschool site, and is valued for its civic role and its intact Late Victorian vernacular design.","period_of_significance":"1892-1920","architect_builder":"Bailey, Theodore","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by Arlington County and still used as a community meeting hall, hosting a cooperative preschool, classes, civic meetings and events.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.161892-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/6795/41679588/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93000833.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000833/d690a5682f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000833/d690a5682f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Greenmars","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carlin_Hall_for_wiki.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenmars</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carlin_Hall_for_wiki.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"08000910","name":"Glencarlyn Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/glencarlyn-historic-district-08000910/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679588","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlin_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712128"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/arlington-county/carlin-hall-93000833/"}
